Explore Glacier park and West Glacier

06 Nov 2025    Things to do in Montana

The west entrance to Glacier National Park — your gateway to the Crown of the Continent.

If you’re planning a trip to Glacier National Park, there’s no better starting point than the west entrance at West Glacier, Montana. With its easy access, mountain views, and charming small-town feel, West Glacier is where adventure begins — and where you’ll find many of the park’s most iconic experiences.

From Lake McDonald’s mirrored waters to the winding heights of Going-to-the-Sun Road, here’s everything you need to know about exploring Glacier’s spectacular west side.

Welcome to West Glacier: The Gateway to Glacier National Park

Nestled along the Middle Fork of the Flathead River, West Glacier Village is a friendly hub just outside the park gates. Here you’ll find cozy cafés, gear shops, and outfitters for rafting and fishing — all within minutes of Glacier’s entrance.

Whether you’re arriving by car along Highway 2 or stepping off the historic Amtrak Empire Builder, West Glacier offers an authentic Montana welcome. It’s the perfect base camp for your national park adventure — especially if you’re staying with Enjoy Montana Vacation Rentals, where our local team lives and works right where you vacation.

Apgar Visitor Center

Entering Glacier: What to Know Before You Go

Glacier National Park’s West Entrance is open year-round, though most services operate from late May through September. During the summer season, you’ll need a vehicle reservation and a park pass to drive the Going-to-the-Sun Road between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Stop by the Apgar Visitor Center just inside the gate to pick up maps, check trail conditions, or chat with a ranger. From here, you can explore scenic drives, hiking trails, and the crystal-clear waters of Lake McDonald — all just minutes from West Glacier.

Lake McDonald Reflections

Calm mornings at Lake McDonald showcase reflections that define Glacier’s west side.

Lake McDonald: The Heart of Glacier’s West Side

Stretching ten miles long and nearly 500 feet deep, Lake McDonald is the largest lake in Glacier National Park — a glacier-carved wonder framed by snow-capped peaks. The lake’s famous rainbow-colored stones shimmer in the shallows, and its calm surface perfectly mirrors the surrounding mountains at sunrise and sunset.

Things to Do:

  • Rent a kayak or paddleboard at Apgar Village and explore the shoreline.

  • Take a leisurely drive along the lake’s southern edge for stunning photo stops.

  • Visit Lake McDonald Lodge, a Swiss-chalet-style icon built in 1913.

  • Stroll the lakeshore trail at dusk to watch the light shift across the peaks.
💡 Local Tip from Enjoy Montana:
“Start your day before 7 a.m. to catch the calmest lake reflections and beat the park crowds. Many of our guests pack breakfast to enjoy lakeside — and trust us, the views are better than any café!”

Going-to-the-Sun Road: A Must-Do Scenic Drive

Going-to-the-Sun Road

Driving through the clouds — the iconic Going-to-the-Sun Road.

Few drives in the world compare to Going-to-the-Sun Road. This 50-mile engineering marvel crosses the Continental Divide, climbing past waterfalls, alpine meadows, and glaciers.

You can drive it yourself (weather and reservation permitting), but for a stress-free way to soak in the scenery, hop aboard one of the park’s historic Red Buses. These open-air “Jammers,” restored from the 1930s, wind through the mountains while expert guides share history, wildlife tips, and the best photo stops along the way.

💡 Pro Tip: Bring layers — even in July, Logan Pass can be chilly!

Hike to Avalanche Lake

Avalanche Lake

One of the park’s most accessible and rewarding trails.

One of Glacier’s most beloved hikes begins just a few miles from Lake McDonald at the Trail of the Cedars. The path winds through ancient forest before following Avalanche Creek to a spectacular alpine lake surrounded by steep cliffs and waterfalls.

It’s a moderate 4.5-mile round trip that rewards you with postcard-perfect views — especially in the early morning when the water is still and the crowds are few.

Rafting & River Adventures

Rafting Flathead River
Whitewater thrills along the Middle Fork of the Flathead.

Looking to add a little adrenaline to your itinerary? The Middle Fork of the Flathead River, running right along the park boundary, offers world-class whitewater rafting and scenic float trips. Several local outfitters in West Glacier provide half-day and full-day adventures — perfect for families, groups, or anyone wanting to see Glacier’s wilderness from a new perspective.

If you prefer something slower-paced, rent a kayak or SUP and explore the calmer stretches of the Flathead or nearby lakes.

Midday: Picnic at Lake McDonald
Afternoon: Red Bus tour or scenic drive on Going-to-the-Sun Road
